What Makes You Join In A Badminton Tournament?

February 3, 2006
By Emma F. Mina

I was resting in a bench after a grueling badminton match when my partner, out of the blue, asked, “What makes a tournament successful?” Good question.

The curious writer in me compelled me to ask friends who are tournament habitués:

“A successful tournament is one that follows its eligibility rules and guidelines. For a working person like me, I like it when game schedules are posted ahead of time and are implemented on time so I can plan my weekend schedule. I also check the quality of shuttlecock being used and I make sure that officiating is good.”
  Noreen Go, Advertising Sales

“I seldom join tournaments because I always check first who the organizer is. I like well-organized tournaments, and it’s critical for me to get good games because that’s what I am paying for. Prizes are also important, and of course, the awarding party. A party compensates for a tournament that has no attractive prizes.”
Poca Alcala, La Salle High School Varsity

“I check the prizes for the winners before I join a tournament. It’s successful for me if my opponents are good because I enjoy challenge. I also check-out if the tournament promotes, not only competition, but camaraderie as well, because I love meeting new friends”
Vj Nazareno, Trinity College Varsity Player

“Successful tournaments are those that encourage beginners because I love watching them. Their passion for the game is very encouraging. I also consider a tournament to be successful if it was well-organized, it’s important that I see there’s a medical assistance ready, good shuttlecock was used and I had good games. As a business person, I want to make sure I am getting my money’s worth in the tournament.”
Liza Martinez, Soutsmash Badminton Court owner

Name it…and Kimoni Tour 2006 has it.

Game schedules posted several days ahead of the tournament, clear guidelines and tournament format, on-time matches, camaraderie, professional and fair game officials, well-balanced matches, value for your money, quality of shuttlecock used in the tournament, prestige, medical assistance, party, fun, prizes.

With all these in mind, Kimoni Philippines headed by its CEO, Billy Lim-it, forged a lethal tandem with Mindworks, an event management group who staged some big tournaments in the past two years, to ensure that all efforts are wielded to address the growing clamor for a tournament that would meet the needs and wants of the Philippine badminton community- from varsity players to recreational badminton aficionados.

Fresh from their successful staging of the New Balance Badminton Challenge and Powerade Badminton Challenge series, Willy Agbulos of Mindworks acknowledged that, “This is our group’s first time to go out of Metro Manila. The trust endowed by Kimoni, however, is a big lift to us and with that trust, I am assured we would do well to provide the badminton recreational players, and even the serious ones who spend their hard-earned money to improve their craft, with what they have always craved for”.

Starting February, the first of ten legs will blast-off in Central Luzon. Then, the group will be heading to Bacolod and Davao on March, Tacloban and Cagayan on April, Cebu and kidapawan on May, and Butuan and Manila on July. The month of June will see action among collegiate teams, with no entry fee, that will be vying for the cash prize of Php 50,000.00, Php 30,000.00 and Php 15,000.00 for first, second and third places, respectively. The winning team and runner-up will likewise be provided by Kimoni Philippines a sponsorship on uniform and other badminton paraphernalia.

The badminton community will once again see in action the biggest gathering of the country’s badminton stand-outs when winners of each leg will trade smashes and will show-off their winning forms at the Battle of the Champions on July 22 and 23 at the Market! Market! Activity Center.

Trophies, Kimoni premium items, a pot of close to one million (Php 1,000,000.00) in prize and Pinoy Power 888 rackets are at stake for the category and level champions.
